GitHub Launches npm Firewall to Block Malicious Packages Before Installation

GitHub has announced that it's introducing a new package firewall as a preview to block installation of suspicious npm packages during installation time. "The firewall inspects both metadata requests and package downloads for signs of malicious activity, acting as an install-time policy gate," GitHub said. The feature, which currently supports only npm packages, is available in public preview

Hackers Exploited Cisco SD-WAN Flaw to Plant Malware Built to Steal Encryption Keys

Hackers exploited a critical Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN flaw, fixed in February, to plant custom malware inside the systems that control an organization's SD-WAN network. The malware, called KeyDrift, is designed to copy the keys that encrypt traffic between sites and store them for later use, Cisco Talos said on October 28. Talos calls the attacks historical but does not specify when they

Police seize Virtualine bulletproof service tied to ransowmare, cybercrime

U.S. law enforcement has seized the primary domain of Virtualine, a bulletproof hosting service advertised on cybercrime forums for facilitating illegal activities. The service also operated under the names Secury, Massgod, Spamhouse, Lanedo, and Omegatech, and promised to shield customers from legal complaints and requests from law enforcement and other authorities. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) confirmed that Virtualine marketed services that permitted “illegal/black hat activities” ranging from phishing, spamming, and carding to port scanning. The FBI seized the primary domain of the service, virtualine[.net], following an investigation that involved Germany’s Polizei Hessen, the Netherlands’ Politie Midden-Nederland, the U.K.’s National Crime Agency, as well as private partners OverRIPE and Lumen.

Third-party Android app stores can now apply to Google for permission to install apps with one tap, without Android's usual confirmation screens, and to update them in the background. To qualify, a store must pass identity checks and send Google its full catalog, along with every new app and update, for ongoing malware scanning. Microsoft urges Entra ID admins to migrate users to passkeys

Microsoft again asked Entra ID administrators to migrate users to phishing-resistant methods to avoid sign-in disruptions before it retires SMS and voice authentication in February 2027. This retirement process applies only to Microsoft Entra ID workforce tenant authentication scenarios and not to Azure AD B2C or Microsoft Entra External ID customer identity scenarios. Before Microsoft retires SMS and voice authentication, admins should ensure all users in their organizations use a phishing-resistant method, since they will no longer be able to use them to complete multifactor authentication and log in to their accounts. Admins can choose from passkeys, QR code authentication, FIDO2 security keys, and other Entra ID-supported sign-in methods. "Microsoft-provided SMS and voice authentication will retire starting February 1, 2027. Complete your migration before rollout begins to avoid interrupting users' sign-in experience," Microsoft said in a Microsoft 365 Message Center update on Tuesday.

Even after PHP2Shell, blast radius matters more than a CVSS score

PHP2Shell shows how quickly attackers can exploit critical vulnerabilities, often before organizations have time to patch. Token Security explains why limiting the access of service accounts, API keys, and AI agents is just as important as fixing vulnerabilities to reduce the damage from a breach.

Hackers now scanning systems for recently-patched Oracle flaw

Attackers have begun probing the Internet for systems unpatched against a recently disclosed critical Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS) vulnerability. Discovered in a core component of EBS's Application Object Library and tracked as CVE-2026-101767, this flaw lets unauthenticated threat actors with HTTP network access take over vulnerable systems in low-complexity attacks. Oracle released security updates to address the issue in its October 2026 Critical Security Patch Update on October 20 and urged customers to patch their systems immediately. "In some instances, it has been reported that attackers have been successful because targeted customers had failed to apply available Oracle patches," it said. "Oracle therefore strongly recommends that customers remain on actively-supported versions and apply security patches without delay."
