Cronos blockchain restarts after $74 million Tectonic exploit

The Cronos blockchain network has resumed trading activity after a price-manipulation attack on the Tectonic cryptocurrency lending platform allowed an attacker to borrow $74 million. According to current information, the threat actor artificially inflated the price of Tectonic’s TONIC token by 100 times, then used it as collateral to borrow real assets. The price manipulation happened in 20 minutes. Despite the massive amount the exploit generated, the attacker only managed to steal roughly $6 million worth of Ethereum, the rest of the funds being “stuck” on Cronos, says blockchain security and data analytics company PeckShield. Cronos is an Ethereum-like blockchain network associated with Crypto.com, while Tectonic is a decentralized finance (DeFi) lending app running on Cronos.

Microsoft Exchange Online outage causes email failures, auth issues

Microsoft is investigating a widespread service issue causing authentication issues, connection problems, email delays and failures, and various other issues for Microsoft 365 customers. It first acknowledged this incident (tracked under EX1464935 in the admin center) at 5:30 PM UTC, when it began investigating a stream of reports from users on social media regarding multiple issues affecting Exchange Online. However, while Exchange Online is the most impacted service, Microsoft revealed in a new incident report (MO1465074) that this outage also impacts multiple other Microsoft 365 services, including OneDrive for Business and SharePoint Online, Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Purview, and Microsoft Defender XDR. According to outage tracking service Downdetector, tens of thousands of Outlook and Microsoft 365 users are affected and experiencing issues receiving emails via Outlook and accessing Microsoft cloud services.

China-linked Fire Ant Hides Inside Trusted Infrastructure

Fire Ant hijacked Cisco routers, stole credentials and altered logs to hide its tracks, using trusted infrastructure to reach high-value networks. Chinese-linked cyber espionage group Fire Ant has spent the past year quietly graduating from hacking individual computers to hacking the infrastructure that connects them. Sygnia’s new report traces how the group expanded from compromising hypervisors into routers, authentication servers, and Linux management hosts, the unglamorous plumbing that decides who gets to log in where and what gets recorded when they do. The investigation started with something that looked like a minor configuration mistake. A tunnel interface showed up as active on a Cisco IOS XR router with no corresponding entry in the configuration history, no commit anyone could point to that explained how it got there. “The investigation began with an anomaly that appeared, at first, to be a configuration inconsistency: a tunnel interface became operational on a Cisco IOS XR router even though no corresponding running configuration or commit history could explain its creation. The interface was associated with a specific VRF and used GRE encapsulation, but standard configuration review did not provide a reliable explanation for how it appeared.” reads the report. “This discrepancy became a key investigative lead because it suggested that the device’s operational state could no longer be trusted to match the configuration and audit records visible to administrators.” That single inconsistency became the thread that unraveled the whole operation, because it meant the router’s own records could no longer be trusted to reflect what the device was actually doing. What Fire Ant built inside that router wasn’t generic malware bolted onto Linux. The toolkit was purpose-written for IOS XR’s own internals, hooking into logging, command execution, and routing functions directly. One component disguised itself as a legitimate boot service and ran on a bizarre schedule, active only during odd-numbered hours and shut off during even ones, apparently timed to dodge routine inspection windows. Another modified the router’s own syslog function so that any log message not containing the word “Health” would silently vanish instead of being recorded, a filter so specific it reads like something built to survive a very particular kind of audit. Following that anomalous tunnel led investigators to a second compromised machine, an aging Linux system acting as the tunnel’s far end. From there, Fire Ant wasn’t just maintaining access, it was actively scanning outward toward other high-value networks, probing SSH, RDP, and web ports on systems connected through the compromised infrastructure. “The actor appeared to use the compromised environment as an infrastructure platform from which it could explore reachability into connected high-value networks, including critical infrastructure.” states Sygnia. “In this model, routers, TACACS servers and jump hosts are not peripheral assets. They are the path to the target behind the target.” The authentication layer got its own dedicated attack, and this is the part that should concern anyone who thinks compromised credentials are the worst-case scenario. Fire Ant injected a malicious library directly into a running TACACS authentication daemon, the software responsible for approving administrator logins across network devices, then intercepted live sessions as they were accepted and quietly copied the credential material flowing through. That’s not stealing a password from a phishing page; that’s sitting inside the process whose entire job is deciding who to trust, watching every legitimate login happen in real time. “The acpid component embedded a modified IOS XR syslog library. In the modified evsyslog flow, log delivery was routed through a custom wrapper that checked for the string “Health” before calling mq_send. When the condition was not met, the wrapper returned a success-like value without forwarding the message, indicating selective manipulation of router log delivery.” states the report. Fire Ant also used deep, persistent backdoors on Linux systems. Some had remained dormant since 2025 and were disguised as normal system services, making them easy to overlook. One even posed as SentinelOne’s security agent and stayed active in memory after its file was deleted, making standard disk-based forensic checks ineffective on their own. Perhaps the most technically distinctive piece was a backdoor that didn’t listen on any port at all in the conventional sense. Instead it silently inspected raw network traffic, waiting for specific packets carrying an embedded magic string before it would activate and open an interactive shell. This design shares real code-level overlap with tooling publicly tied to UNC3886, a China-nexus espionage cluster Google and Mandiant have tracked for years, though the specific activation strings and packet-handling logic here differ enough from earlier public reporting that Sygnia treats it as an evolution rather than a straight reuse. “The key choice is notable because Mandiant previously documented UNC3886 TACACS credential-collection tooling in which captured credential records were also XORed with 0xEF before being written to a credential log file.” continues the report. Once inside, Fire Ant didn’t just avoid detection, it actively edited the evidence. Login records in Linux’s own wtmp, utmp, and btmp files got rewritten to swap out the router’s real IP address for an internal one, and sudo-related entries were stripped from system logs to erase any trace of privilege escalation. Sygnia’s core warning for defenders cuts against a habit most incident responders have built their careers on: logs are not automatically ground truth anymore, and any investigation into infrastructure this deeply compromised has to cross-check log evidence against memory, disk state, and network telemetry independently rather than trusting any single source on its own. The bigger concern is that Fire Ant was not mainly interested in the systems it first compromised. It used them as a stepping stone into more valuable networks connected through trusted routing and authentication relationships — what Sygnia calls the “target behind the target.” This means edge routers, TACACS servers and Linux jump hosts can be just as important to protect as systems holding sensitive data, especially when they connect to critical infrastructure. These often-overlooked systems can give a patient and well-resourced attacker a trusted path deeper into the environment, making them a valuable target rather than an unimportant middle layer. “The central lesson is that defenders must protect more than the systems that store sensitive data. Critical GiveWP Flaw Lets Attackers Run Commands on WordPress Servers

A critical GiveWP flaw lets unauthenticated attackers execute server commands. Version 4.16.7.2 fixes the PHP object injection chain. A critical vulnerability in GiveWP, one of the most widely used WordPress plugins for online donations and fundraising, can let an unauthenticated attacker execute commands on the server. Patchstack disclosed the flaw on August 28, after researcher Udin Chan reported it on July 28, and GiveWP fixed it in version 4.16.7.2 released on August 27. The issue, tracked as CVE-2026-82222 (CVSS score of 10.0), affects GiveWP versions through 4.16.7.1. An attacker doesn’t need an account or user interaction to exploit the underlying vulnerability. “In versions 4.16.7.1 and below, GiveWP contains an unauthenticated PHP Object Injection vulnerability that can be chained into full remote code execution. On 4.16.5.1 and below a default installation is enough to exploit: it ships with an active manual (Test Donation) gateway and an active offline gateway, and only needs one published donation form.” reads the report published by PatchStack. “No Test Mode, open registration, debug mode, or administrator action is required.” That description sounds severe because it is. The problem isn’t one isolated coding mistake. Patchstack found a chain involving unsafe handling of serialized PHP objects, a donation workflow that can carry attacker-controlled data into storage, and classes already included in GiveWP that can turn the injected object into command execution. GiveWP is designed for nonprofits and other organizations that collect donations through WordPress. The plugin handles donation forms, payment gateways, donor information and reporting, so a server running it can hold data that attackers would have plenty of reasons to target. The root cause of the problem is a helper that GiveWP created to make PHP’s unserialize() safer. It uses PHP’s allowed_classes => false option, which looks like a sensible defense at first glance. There’s a catch. PHP doesn’t simply throw the serialized object away. Instead, it converts the object into an __PHP_Incomplete_Class placeholder while keeping the original class name and properties. When GiveWP later serializes that placeholder again, those original object details go back into the serialized data. The application has effectively carried the attacker’s payload forward instead of removing it. That distinction matters because the malicious object eventually reaches another part of GiveWP that reads the stored data without the same restriction. At that point, PHP can recreate the original object and the rest of the attack chain can continue. The donation process gives the attacker a way to move that malicious data into GiveWP’s session storage. Patchstack found that the application reads donor information from the user’s account and sends the fields through the supposedly safe unserialization helper. The attacker-controlled data can therefore survive the first check and reach the wp_give_sessions table. A later request reads the session and processes the serialized object again, this time without the protection that was supposed to stop it. This is a classic example of why serialization bugs can be difficult to contain. Checking data at one point doesn’t help much if the application later stores that data and processes it differently somewhere else. The object injection alone doesn’t automatically mean arbitrary command execution. An attacker also needs a gadget chain, meaning existing application code that can be manipulated to turn the injected object into a dangerous operation. Patchstack found that GiveWP ships code that provides exactly that missing piece. The chain involves the TCPDF library and GiveWP’s own Give\TestData classes, eventually reaching a function call controlled by properties inside the injected object. “Because loadedProviders is just an array property carried inside the injected object, the attacker sets it to any callable they like.” continues the report. “Pointing it at system() executes an arbitrary OS command as the web server user.” That means the attacker can turn control of the object into control of what function the application calls. In the vulnerable code, that can lead to execution of an operating system command with the privileges of the web server. At that point, this stops being a data-handling problem and becomes a server compromise problem. If the WordPress process has access to sensitive files, databases or other internal resources, the impact can extend well beyond the GiveWP plugin itself. GiveWP’s registration feature ignores WordPress’s users_can_register setting, allowing attackers to create accounts even when registration is disabled. Version 4.16.6 added a nonce check, but attackers can still obtain and reuse the nonce on sites with the public registration shortcode. Patchstack says versions 4.16.5.1 and earlier are directly exploitable on default installations. Versions 4.16.6–4.16.7.1 reduce the attack surface but leave the underlying flaw exploitable through legacy forms. Version 4.16.7.2 fully fixes the issue. GiveWP 4.16.7.2 takes a broader approach to fixing the RCE. It blocks serialized data before storage, limits where stored data can be deserialized, hardens the vulnerable gadget and sanitizes donor and billing metadata. It also scans existing database records and removes serialized objects that could contain malicious payloads. This cleanup matters because updating the code alone cannot remove data already stored by an attacker. Patchstack also found that the earlier 4.16.6 fix could preserve malicious serialized data after detecting __PHP_Incomplete_Class; 4.16.7.2 rejects it instead. Administrators should update to 4.16.7.2 or later, review logs and signs of compromise, and check older or imported donation forms. The separate registration issue remains unresolved, but Patchstack treats it as an access-control problem rather than part of the patched RCE chain. The Manchester Airports Group data breach has been claimed by extortion group FulcrumSec, which told BleepingComputer that it stole approximately 86 GB of data. Samples reviewed by BleepingComputer contained information consistent with MAG's disclosure while indicating that the breach exposed considerably more detailed customer, booking, and travel information than initially revealed. Manchester Airports Group (MAG), the United Kingdom's largest airport operator, disclosed on August 27 that an unauthorized third party had stolen customer data related to Manchester, London Stansted, and East Midlands airports. The company said the affected information came from car park, lounge, and Fast Track bookings and in-airport Wi-Fi registrations. Anthropic warns infostealer malware is hijacking Claude sessions to drain usage

Anthropic is warning some Claude users that infostealer malware on their PCs has stolen active Claude login sessions, allowing attackers to access accounts and consume their usage. The company is signing affected users out of Claude, removing saved payment methods, and refunding charges it identifies as unauthorized. "We have recently become aware of a bad actor that is using common infostealer malware to steal Claude login sessions from people's computers, then using those login sessions to access Claude accounts and consume their usage," Anthropic said in an email sent to an affected user, who shared it on Reddit. "If your usage limits looked like they refilled and then drained while you weren't using Claude, this was likely the cause," Anthropic warned. It is also worth noting that infostealers can copy an already authenticated browser session, which means the attacker may not need to go through the normal password and 2FA login process again.

Chrome Web Store extensions caught stealing crypto, browser data

Multiple extensions for Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge delivered a malware framework that deployed modules to steal cryptocurrency, sensitive data, and browser history, and to inject ClickFix lures. Researchers say all 16 malicious modules uncovered in the campaign serve distinct purposes and are designed to be "highly extensible." The operation was uncovered by application security company Socket, and the investigation indicates that it may have been active since early 2024. Socket says that when initially published on the Chrome Web Store, many of the extensions provided the advertised functionality and contained no malware. According to the researchers, five of the extensions were acquired from their original creators and injected with malware via updates delivered automatically. One example is the "Enable Right Click & Copy — Smart Unlock + OCR" extension, the only one in the campaign available for both Chrome and Edge, which had a Chrome user base of at least 70,000 when it turned malicious. The number of installs on Edge was 10,000 at the time.
