Zero-click attacks used targeted ads to deliver Candiru spyware

Candiru spyware was delivered to devices at Al Jazeera Media Network via targeted online advertisements in a zero-click attack that required only rendering the malicious ads on the victim's device. Researchers at Citizen Labs investigating the attacks referred to this technique as AdFection, noting that their report is the first public technical confirmation of mercenary spyware delivered through targeted ads. A similar method was documented in late 2025 by Amnesty International, involving ads that infected targets with Predator spyware without them clicking anything. That infection mechanism was called Aladdin and surfaced due to a collection of marketing files and documents leaked from the Intellexa surveillance company that researchers studied and corroborated with technical details from forensic investigations.

Microsoft: October Windows update may break Smart App Control

Microsoft says some users may have trouble turning on Smart App Control after installing this month's KB5127648 Windows 11 security update. Smart App Control is a Windows 11 security feature that uses Microsoft's app intelligence services and code integrity features and works alongside Microsoft Defender and SmartScreen to block potentially harmful apps or binaries. According to the company, on affected devices running Windows 11, version 24H2 and later, the Smart App Control option is grayed out and cannot be toggled. "After installing this update, some devices might be unable to turn on Smart App Control in the Windows Security app if it has been turned off. BAE Systems cyberattack disrupts US federal court operations

The Administrative Office of the US Courts says a cyberattack on government contractor BAE Systems has taken down the notice system used by federal bankruptcy courts. In a Thursday press release, the Administrative Office of the US Courts said the BAE Systems cyberattack also halted the production and distribution of bankruptcy notices. "The Administrative Office of the US Courts has been in communication with the impacted courts and is also coordinating with BAE Systems. BAE is actively investigating this incident and working to restore operations," it said. "As a result of the incident, all access to the BNC systems and websites that BAE operates on behalf of the Judiciary and the related bankruptcy noticing process are unavailable at this time, including bnc.uscourts.gov, bankruptcynotices.uscourts.gov, notices.uscourts.gov, and the National Creditor Registration Service."

CenterPoint Energy Data Breach: More Than 1 Million Texans Affected

The regulated utility company CenterPoint Energy says a data breach exposed the personal information of more than 1 million people in Texas. CenterPoint Energy is a regulated utility company used to deliver natural gas and electricity infrastructure, maintain power grids and pipelines, and restore service across parts of Texas, Indiana, Ohio, and Minnesota. The organization disclosed a data breach affecting more than 1 million people in Texas. This week, CenterPoint Energy told the Texas Attorney General’s Office that the breach affected 1,062,060 Texas residents. The company does not appear to have notified the affected individuals by letter. “More than one million Texans were affected by a CenterPoint Energy data breach that compromised sensitive personal information, according to newly published information from the Texas Attorney General’s Office.” reported the broadcast Click2Huston. “The state’s data breach database lists 1,062,060 Texans as being affected. The information involved includes customers’ names, addresses, Social Security information and driver’s-license numbers.” Days before the first disclosure, on September 12, a threat actor using the alias “4d722e4d656f77” claimed on a cybercrime forum to have extracted roughly 7.49 million customer records from CenterPoint Energy. “In September 2026, CenterPoint Energy, Inc. (the “Company”) became aware of an online post by a third party claiming to have obtained a data set containing certain of the Company’s customer information.” reads the FORM 8-K report filed with SEC.”While the investigation remains ongoing, the Company has determined that an unauthorized third party obtained personal information relating to a portion of the Company’s customers through one of the Company’s external facing systems (the “Incident”).” The hacker claimed the theft of names, phone numbers, service and billing addresses, account numbers, billing amounts, payment status, and partial Social Security numbers. He offered a 2.5 GB archive for download. The attacker warned that “next time we won’t simply pull data, we’ll start attacking the main infrastructure,” a line that reads well on a forum but should still be taken seriously by any critical infrastructure operator. The attackers claimed they stole over the records through an API they say lacked proper WAF protection, rate limiting, and authentication. They also claimed the company tried to stop the data dump only after millions of records had been extracted. “CenterPoint Energy continues to actively investigate the cybersecurity incident disclosed last month. Upon learning of the issue, CenterPoint activated our incident response procedures and engaged external cybersecurity, forensic, and legal advisors to assist with the investigation.” a spokesperson for CenterPoint said on Wednesday. “We continue to work with third-party experts to assess the scope of affected customer data to identify which customers will be provided notifications in accordance with applicable legal requirements.” Follow me on Twitter: @securityaffairs and Facebook and Mastodon Pierluigi Paganini (SecurityAffairs – hacking, data breach)

BeyondTrust patches zero-day exploited in attacks since August

BeyondTrust warned customers on Thursday to patch a critical flaw in its Remote Support (RS) that has been exploited in zero-day attacks since late August. Remote Support is the company's enterprise-grade support solution that helps IT service desks, help desks, and customer support teams troubleshoot issues remotely. Tracked as CVE-2026-102764, this actively exploited authentication bypass vulnerability lets unprivileged remote attackers perform file operations on unpatched appliances and affects RS 26.2.3 or earlier. BeyondTrust patched the security issue for all Remote Support and Privileged Remote Access SaaS customers on October 8, but self-hosted installations must be patched manually if automatic updates are not enabled. While the company shared limited details about the vulnerability, it said the zero-day was abused in the wild by a suspected China-nexus espionage actor tracked by Mandiant and Google Threat Intelligence Group (GTIG) security researchers as "Armory Castle" (formerly UNC5221) and by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike as "Warp Panda."

A local privilege escalation exploit published today gains root on OpenBSD 7.9 by chaining a roughly 37-year-old integer overflow with a separate kernel flaw, bypassing OpenBSD's KARL kernel-address randomization and its SMAP and SMEP hardware protections. Security firm Calif, which found and reported the flaws, published a detailed writeup and full proof-of-concept code after OpenBSD shipped
